Quaker parrots, also known as Monk Parakeets, are renowned for their charming and comical personalities, as well as their remarkable ability to mimic human speech. These delightful birds offer all the fun and engagement of a larger parrot in a smaller, more manageable size, making them an excellent choice for bird enthusiasts, including dedicated beginners. Quaker parrots adapt well to living in a "human flock" setting, thriving in household environments where they can interact frequently with their human companions.

Legal Considerations

It is legal to own a Quaker parrot in most states, although some states have specific restrictions or requirements. Laws can change, so it is important to stay current with your state's legislation before considering adoption. The Quaker Parrot Society provides an updated list of legal statuses by state:

  • Legal with No Restrictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah
  • Legal with Restrictions:
    • New Jersey: Legal with a permit issued at the discretion of the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife.
    • New York: Legal, but Quakers (as well as all companion birds) must be banded if sold by or boarded at a pet shop.
    • Ohio: Legal, but their wings must be clipped.
